Best Fruit and Honey Parfait Recipe to Prep Ahead
This is such an easy recipe and perfect for breakfast, an on-the-go lunch, or a simple snack!
A printable recipe can be found at the end of this article.
Is Eating Parfait Good For You?
First of all, I’d like to start with the question, “Is a parfait healthy?”
As with most foods, the ingredients you choose will answer that question.
For a parfait, the main elements to consider are the base and the toppings.
My honey parfait has a greek yogurt base. Greek yogurt has many health benefits, including probiotics, calcium, protein and B-12 vitamins.
However, you must read the ingredients in the brand of greek yogurt that you choose. Some brands add sweeteners, gelatin or other unnecessary ingredients that can lessen the healthiness of greek yogurt.
Then, the toppings are the next ingredient that can quickly make a healthy parfait, unhealthy. Sugary cereals and other sweet toppings like chocolate chips will turn a healthy snack into an unhealthy one quickly.
Why Is It Called a Parfait?
The word parfait is French for perfect.
Sounds about right to me.
A true parfait began as more of a dessert made with cream, eggs and sugar. As the decades went on, many have altered the ingredients to make it healthier. However, the basic premise of a parfait is that it is a layered dish. That still remains true, even with this healthier version.
What is a Parfait Made Of?
Parfaits can be made of many different combinations of ingredients. That is the best thing about them!
You can mix in your favorite toppings to personalize a parfait to your liking. If you choose to go with the original parfait, your base will be made with cream, eggs and sugar.
Or, you can choose to use yogurt or greek yogurt as the base, like my recipe calls for.
Next, you will add in layers of fruit. You can top it off with a variety of toppings, which I will list below.
Best Fruits for Parfait Layers
I love to combine different fruits in my honey parfait.
You can choose to have more of a tropical flavoring with fruits like kiwi or mango. Or, you can have a sweet flavoring with berries. Apples add a nice crunch. And bananas are especially nice for those who love their texture.
Some of the best fruits and fruit combinations for parfait layers are:
- Three Berry: Raspberry, blueberry, strawberry
- Mango and Blackberry
- Banana and strawberry
- Kiwi and mango
- Kiwi and strawberry
- Peach and blackberry
- Apple and blackberry
- Apple (plain or with cinnamon)
Of course, you can also stick to just one fruit per parfait if you prefer!
Best Toppings for Honey Parfait
The next ingredients to consider are the toppings.
Technically, you can add in as many or as little toppings as you like.
Here are a few favorites:
- Honey (as a standard rule for this honey parfait recipe)
- Peanut Butter (with banana would be so good!)
- Jam
- Almonds
- Pistachio
- Walnuts
- Pecans
- Cinnamon
- Nutmeg
- Coconut
- Granola
- Dried fruit (like raisins, cranberries, blueberries, dates or apricots)
Can I Make a Fruit and Honey Parfait Ahead of Time?
Yes! You can absolutely make a parfait ahead of time.
My recipe calls for individual sized parfaits that can be made and stored in air tight containers for up to 3-4 days (depending on the freshness of your fruit).
I tend to use two different size jars for my parfaits.
For parfaits that have yogurt with honey and granola, I use the larger 16 oz mason jar.
First, fill the jar halfway with fruit, yogurt and honey and store in the refrigerator. Then, the day you are ready to eat it, you can simply add granola to the top on your way out the door! The larger size allows you to do this easily without overflow.
If you don’t want a lot of extra toppings like granola, you can stick to the 8 oz size and fill to the top.
I prefer these large mouth 16 oz jars over the traditional mason jar when eating with granola or other toppers.
I also love to use different styles of jars. These jelly jars are still the 8 oz size but are extra cute and make the perfect mini fruit parfait! Shop a variety of sizes and looks below.
You can also swap the metal mason jar lids for these wood pop top lids to make it easier on the go!
Fruit & Honey Parfait Recipe
This fruit and honey parfait recipe is extremely simple. It’s all about creating a flavor combination you enjoy!
I prefer vanilla greek yogurt as it’s a nice combination with the honey and fruit. However, you can use plain greek yogurt, or any flavor you prefer!
- Cut up your choice of fruit
- Layer fruit into a mason jar
- Add a layer of greek yogurt
- Add fruit layer
- Add greek yogurt layer
- Top with honey (Honey has many health benefits, but also adds that touch of sweetness to counterbalance the greek yogurt.)
- Add other desired toppings like cinnamon, nutmeg or any combination from the list above.
- Store in the refrigerator until ready to eat.
- Add granola, nuts or cereals only right before eating.
